With its draw against the Philadelphia Union this past Saturday, Crew SC extended its undefeated streak to 13 consecutive regular-season matches, dating back to a 3-1 home victory over the Chicago Fire on August 12, 2017. Over that span, the Black & Gold have posted a record of 8-0-5 while outscoring their opponents 24-12.

Goalkeeper Zack Steffen registered his second shutout of the 2018 MLS regular season in Saturday’s 0-0 draw against the Philadelphia Union. Steffen’s shutout marked the first time that a Crew SC goalkeeper has recorded two shutouts in the first three matches of the regular season since Andy Gruenebaum accomplished this feat in 2012. Steffen’s previous shutout came in a 2-0 road victory over Toronto FC on March 3, 2018.  The 22-year-old goalkeeper also made three saves during Saturday’s match, tying his season-high for most saves in a single match, as he had previously made three saves for the Black & Gold during a home match against the Montreal Impact (March 10). In 2018, Steffen has made three regular-season appearances, registering eight saves and two shutouts. Since joining the Black & Gold in 2016, Steffen has made 37 regular-season appearances (all starts), registering 106 saves and 11 shutouts.

Midfielder Wil Trapp and goalkeeper Zack Steffen recently received international call-ups from the United States Men’s National Team ahead of a U.S. friendly against Paraguay on March 27. Wil Trapp has represented the U.S. Men’s National Team on three occasions, with his last appearance coming as a starter in a 0-0 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina earlier this year (January 28). In addition to making his first start for the Stars and Stripes, Trapp also captained the senior national team for the first time in his career. Meanwhile, Zack Steffen earned his first cap for the U.S. in that same friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina, coming in as a substitute for Bill Hamid in the second half of the match. In addition to Trapp and Steffen, Crew SC’s current roster features five other players who have represented their national teams: Mohammed Abu (Ghana), Harrison Afful (Ghana), Cristian Martinez (Panama), Jonathan Mensah (Ghana) and Gyasi Zardes (U.S.).

Through three matches in the 2018 regular season, defender Lalas Abubakar and midfielders Wil Trapp and Artur are amongst the top passers in MLS. Per Opta, Artur is currently in fourth place in attempted passes (200), slightly ahead of teammate Wil Trapp (187). Similarly, both Artur and Trapp are tied for fourth place when it comes to completed passes (172). Defender Lalas Abubakar is in second place in passing accuracy for players who have attempted at least 100 passes, having completed 143 of his 155 passes with an accuracy percentage of 92.26%. Abubakar is behind only Atlanta United’s Michael Parkhurst (93.38% accuracy) and ahead of Trapp (91.98% accuracy).

Through three regular-season matches, Crew SC midfielders Artur, Wil Trapp and Pedro Santos are amongst the most effective tacklers in MLS. Per Opta, Artur is currently in second place in the League when it comes to tackle success percentage (81.25%) for those who have attempted 10 or more tackles, in third place in tackles won (13) and in fifth place in attempted tackles (16). Similarly, Wil Trapp is tied with Ibson (Minnesota United FC) and Samuel Piette (Montreal Impact) for seventh-highest tackle success percentage (72.72%) amongst players who have attempted 10 or more tackles.  Trapp is also tied in seventh place with Ibson, Piette, Wilfried Zahibo (New England Revolution) and Pedro Santos for most tackles won (eight), and he is tied in eighth place with Ibson and Piette for most attempted tackles (11). Meanwhile, Pedro Santos is tied with Zahibo and Rasmus Schuller (Minnesota United) for third-highest tackle success percentage (80%) amongst players who have attempted 10 or more tackles. Additionally, Santos is tied for 11th place with eight other players for most attempted tackles (10).

Midfielder Federico Higuain is on the verge of making history for Crew SC by becoming the first Black & Gold player to register 50 goals and 50 assists for the club. Through 152 regular-season appearances, the Argentine has scored 50 goals while providing 49 assists since joining Crew SC in 2012. Should Higuain provide one more assist in regular-season action, he would join a very elite club of MLS players to achieve this milestone, as only 18 other players have managed to accomplish this feat. Higuain would also become one of only two active players to have registered at least 50 goals and 50 assists, with Diego Valeri being the other player (58 goals, 53 assists).
