The Black & Gold return to Lower.com Field on Saturday night when the Columbus Crew host Western Conference side Seattle Sounders FC in a rescheduled matchup between two of the league’s most prestigious clubs. Don’t forget to remind Seattle supporters this is a 2020 MLS Cup Final rematch, too!
Numbers to Know
1 – Saturday night’s match was originally scheduled for June 1, but the fixture was rescheduled to accommodate the Columbus Crew’s Concacaf Champions Cup Final with CF Pachuca. Oh, and speaking of Concacaf, the organization released an updated power ranking that lists the Black & Gold as the best club on the continent.
As we all know, the Crew recently played in three finals in nine months, and in a few weeks, Club América will be at Lower.com Field on Sept. 25 for the Campeones Cup. One thing to note: Because this match is rescheduled during an international window, the Crew will be without several players who are away competing for their respective countries.
38 – This match’s key stat is all about you, the supporters. In the Club’s last 38 home matches across all competitions, Columbus is unbeaten in 36 of them. During that spell, the Crew have 25 wins and 11 draws. The side only has lost once in its last 24 MLS regular season home games. These aren’t just stats to make fans feel good – opponents are aware of it, too.
8 – Seattle Sounders FC enters Saturday night eighth in the Western Conference standings with 40 points from 27 league matches. Currently sitting in a play-in game position, the Sounders will be hoping for a positive result against a strong Columbus side missing key players on international duty. After two straight difficult losses – to LAFC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinal and at arch-rival Portland Timbers – Seattle will be looking to bounce back at one of the hardest places to play.
13 – Don’t forget Jordan Morris is still banging in goals for Seattle. Morris has logged 15,000 minutes in MLS matches since 2016, and he has 63 career goals and 26 assists. In 2024, he’s got 10 goals and an assist during league play. It should also be noted he just scored three goals in five Leagues Cup appearances. The 29-year-old isn’t competing to win an MLS MVP award this season, but he’s been a constant presence – and annoyance – for opposing backlines.
When They Last Played
It’s been a minute. The sides last met Aug. 21, 2021 at Lower.com, where the Crew lost, 2-1. Bradley Wright-Phillips scored the home side’s lone goal. The match before that, though, was the 2020 MLS Cup, which Columbus won, 3-0.
