DOWNTOWN STADIUM | Columbus Crew SC recognizes frontline workers with first structural steel column erected at construction site of new Downtown Stadium

COLUMBUS — Columbus Crew SC today celebrated a construction milestone at its future downtown stadium and in doing so, paid a special recognition to frontline workers during the current COVID-19 pandemic. This morning, the first structural steel column was erected at the new, 20,000-seat stadium. The first steel column, which is over 23 feet long and weighs 1.7 tons, was erected in the Southeast corner of the stadium at pitch level, and was commemorated with a special marking denoting “#InThisTogetherOhio” to recognize those that have worked tirelessly on the frontlines during this extremely difficult period of time.

“On behalf of the Columbus Crew SC ownership group, front office, players and coaches, we wanted to mark this stadium construction milestone with a special recognition of frontline workers who are courageously navigating this global pandemic,” said Crew SC President and General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “Today marks a significant step in the process of building a dynamic, world-class stadium that will unify our fans and our community, not just on match day but 365 days a year. We are excited about the progress as we build toward a July 2021 opening. The first structural column’s installation comes at a challenging and unique time in our history. We are truly honored to recognize those who have worked so selflessly on the frontlines and want those individuals to know that the Crew, Columbus and all Ohio is immensely grateful.”

The erection of the structural steel column for the Nordecke at Crew SC’s new downtown stadium is targeted for this summer, while the Topping Out ceremony – which celebrates the placement of the final piece of structural steel in a construction site – is anticipated to take place in the late fall. Overall, a total of 5,410 tons of steel is projected to be used in the construction of the stadium.

On Wednesday, the Club unveiled official social media accounts (@CrewStadium) of its new downtown stadiums as well as updated renderings of the venue. The new renderings feature five images of Crew SC’s new stadium, showcasing the following: The Southwest side of the stadium on Nationwide Boulevard, displaying the stadium’s iconic roof design; the Northwest side of the stadium with an entrance leading into the Nordecke, which is set to be the second-largest supporters section in Major League Soccer; the Southeast side of the stadium, which displays the CrewHouse, which displays the CrewHouse, a 5,000 square feet Brew Hall with open views to the entrance plaza; and the West side of the stadium which includes an exclusive covered entrance for all premium club members located near the future VIP parking deck.
