Post-match quotes: Crew SC vs. Toronto FC

Gregg Berhalter vs. TFC

GREGG BERHALTER – HEAD COACH, COLUMBUS CREW SC

What did you think about Steve Clark tonight in the end?

“He did well. I think Giovinco was able to create a number of chances and Steve was good, he was in position and able to avoid further damage. Toronto clearly deserved to win this game; we weren’t threatening enough or moving the ball around enough. Our transition wasn’t fast enough and overall this was a disappointment.”

What did you see from Adam John tonight as he made his debut?

“Well he showed that he has that physical aspect to his game. He did a pretty good job winning balls, using his body, so we can play a bit more direct sometimes when we need to. He certainly showed that.”

Gregg, it’s been difficult to pinpoint why there are such drastic results comparing this season to last season. Is there anything you can point to?

“I think tonight clearly wasn’t good enough. I didn’t think we deserved to get anything out of that game. I think other games this season we played extremely well and potentially could’ve gotten more out of it but that’s how soccer goes. I have said this time and time again, “there’s a very fine line between victory and defeat in soccer and sometimes you are on the wrong line of it. This season more than not, we have been on the wrong side of it.”

WIL TRAPP – MIDFIELDER, COLUMBUS CREW SC

Your general thoughts on the game tonight?

“We had a decent bit of possession but overall it was unacceptable. Three goals conceded. You never want to do that but I think Giovinco showed his quality tonight.  They did well in transition moments.  We weren’t the best in transition moments.”

What do you guys need to do to right the ship and prepare for the next game vs. New York City FC?

“The biggest thing is everyone just believing in each other and the system and ourselves. I think it’s a serious challenge mentally and we’ll see if we come out on the right side or not.”

How were you feeling today considering you played on Wednesday in the MLS All Star Game?

It’s fine.  It’s a long travel day but it was only 45 minutes. So not that big a deal.”

STEVE CLARK – GOALKEEPER, COLUMBUS CREW SC

General thoughts on the game today?

“Toronto deserved to win the game. We didn’t bring our best and we payed for it.”

Do you find it even more difficult when you get a couple deflection goals like that?

“Obviously it’s hard to start the game with a deflection goal, it is unlucky and difficult but it doesn’t sink our whole ship.  That was in the eighth minute. I don’t think it’s about that, I feel like it’s more about us and what we want to be and how we want to perform.”

Is there anything you guys do to prepare for a player like Giovinco?

“We want to group defend him. We have had a very successful past against Giovinco in the last two or three games. But he’s a very good player and you have to give him credit.”
