Columbus Crew SC today announced that midfielder Kristinn Steindorsson has earned his first Iceland National Team senior roster call-up for a pair of upcoming friendlies. Steindorsson is on Iceland's roster as named by joint head coaches Lars Lagerbäck and Heimir Hallgrímsson for tilts on January 16 and January 19. The matches, both against Canada, are set to take place in Orlando at the University of Central Florida Soccer and Track Complex.
The midfielder previously made several appearances for his country's Youth National Teams, scoring five times for the Under-17s and once for the U-21s. He appeared in qualification matches for both the 2013 and 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championships, scoring his lone U-21 goal in an 8-0 win over San Marino ahead of the 2011 tournament.
The winger is one of just two players who play club soccer outside of the Nordic countries to receive a call-up for the pair of friendlies, joining defender Sölvi Ottesen, who plays in Russia. Steindorsson, a native of Kópavogur, previously signed with Crew SC on December 11, 2014 ahead of the 2015 campaign.
The Black & Gold return to Major League Soccer action in their 20th season on March 7 with a test at Houston before the Opening Match at Crew Stadium on Saturday, March 14 against Toronto FC.
