PHILADELPHIA – Columbus Crew SC today selected University of Virginia forward Eddie Opoku with the ninth pick in the Second Round (32nd overall) of the 2018 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Opoku is a member of the 2018 Generation adidas class and will be immediately added to the Black & Gold roster.
Opoku, a member of the 2018 Generation adidas class, was selected with the ninth pick (32nd overall) of the Second Round by the club. The 21-year-old forward was born in Konongo, Odumasi, Ghana and came to the U.S. through the Right to Dream Academy. He attended the University of Virginia from 2015-2017, making 53 appearances (all starts) while registering 16 goals and nine assists. Opoku was named to the USC Second Team All-American in 2016 and 2017, as well as to the USC First Team All-South Region in 2016. Prior to attending the University of Virginia, went to high school at Millbrook School and was named the MVP of the 2014 High School All-American Game.
The 2017 MLS SuperDraft resumes with the Third and Fourth Rounds, conducted via conference call on on Sunday, January 21 with the Black & Gold currently holding the 21st pick (67th overall) in the Third Round, respectively.
Under Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter, the 2018 MLS Preseason begins on Wednesday, January 24, at SuperKick in Lewis Center, Ohio after entrance physicals and testing. From there, the club departs to Casa Grande, Arizona for its preseason camp on Friday, January 26. Crew SC is slated to remain in Arizona through February 6 before traveling to Honolulu, Hawaii to participate in the inaugural Pacific Rim Cup from February 6-11. Following the conclusion of the Pacific Rim Cup, the club travels to Charleston, South Carolina to participate in the 2018 Carolina Challenge Cup.
