COLUMBUS – Columbus Crew SC today announced that the Club has signed 22-year-old defender/midfielder Chris Cadden. As part of the transaction, Cadden is set to immediately go on a loan to Oxford United FC of England’s League One before joining Crew SC ahead of the 2020 campaign. Cadden most recently played for Motherwell FC of the Scottish Premiership, Scotland’s First Division, making over 100 appearances for the club. At the international level, Cadden has earned two caps for the Scotland National Team.
“We have been active during this transfer window in looking to strengthen our roster in both the short and long-term,” said Crew SC President and General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “In negotiating this particular transaction, it simply made sense for all parties for the player to join the Club in 2020 after gaining valuable experience in England this summer and fall. A postseason push this year remains a critical priority for this Club and we will continue to use this transfer window to fortify our team to deliver results.”
Cadden last played in Scotland’s topflight from 2013-2019, making 139 appearances while scoring 12 goals and providing 21 assists for the club across all competitions. The defender helped The Steelmen finish in second place in the Premiership (2014/2014) as well as reach the final of the League Cup (2017/2018) and the final of the Scottish Cup (2017/2018).
Cadden spent the second half of the 2014/2015 season on loan at Albion Rovers FC of League Two. While with Albion Rovers, he made 10 appearances and tallied two goals while helping the club win a League Two title and achieve promotion to League One.
At the international level, Cadden has earned two caps with the Scotland National team, making his debut last year in an international friendly against Peru (May 30). The Defender also featured for Scotland at the Under-21 level.
Cadden comes from a family of soccer players as his brother, Nicky plays professionally in Scotland and father, Steve, also had a pro career. Upon his arrival in Columbus following his loan, Cadden will be added to the Black & Gold roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa and will occupy an international roster slot on Crew SC’s roster.
