Columbus Crew SC announced it has signed Homegrown Player Wil Trapp to a multi-year contract extension. The 24-year-old is in his fifth season with the Black & Gold and was named captain of the club ahead of the 2017 Major League Soccer Season. Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) was used in this transaction. Trapp has made 95 regular-season appearances (92 starts) for Crew SC and was named to the 2016 AT&T MLS All-Star Roster.

  • Signed Homegrown contract with Crew SC on 12/13/2013 at the age of 19.

  • He made 16 appearances (all starts) in his rookie season in 2013, notching one assist and playing 1,389 minutes.

  • He was awarded the 2016 “Breakthrough Performance of the Year” honor by Crew SC.
  • In 2014, the midfielder was named vice captain ahead of his second season with the club.

  • He represented the Black & Gold at the inaugural Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game as part of the AT&T MLS All-Star Game festivities in 2014.

  • Has made 95 regular-season appearances (92 starts); 1 goal, 9 assists

  • Per Opta, Trapp was one of only two players to successfully complete over 1,600 passes (1,734) during the 2016 MLS regular season. 

  • In 2016, out of the 93 MLS players to attempt at least 1,000 passes, Trapp ranked second in passing accuracy with a rate of 88.06%.  

  • So far this season (2017) he is in fourth place in number of total passes (159) and in fifth place in number of successful passes (136). His accuracy percentage is 85.53%, which puts him at fifth for players with over 150 passes.

  • In 2016, Trapp became Columbus Crew SC's first ever Homegrown Player All-Star, featuring against the English Premier League's Arsenal in San Jose, Calif.

  • He's earned two senior USMNT caps, while also serving as a member of the Under-14, U-15, U-18, U-20 and U-23 U.S. National Teams.

  • In college, Trapp made 45 appearances (all starts) for the University of Akron in two seasons (2011-12). He twice earned All-Mid-American Conference First Team honors (2011-12) and was the MAC Newcomer of the Year in 2011.
