TRADE | Columbus Crew SC acquires goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell in trade with the San Jose Earthquakes

COLUMBUS — Columbus Crew SC today announced that the club has acquired goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell (pronounced:TAR-bell) via a trade with the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for $75,000 in 2020 General Allocation Money (GAM). Tarbell, 26, is a four-year MLS veteran who has made 41 regular-season appearances (40 starts).

“Andrew is a talented goalkeeper with proven experience in our League,” said Crew SC President and General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “He is someone who will push our goalkeeping group, as well as help us strengthen our roster. We are excited to welcome Andrew to Columbus Crew SC and look forward to working with him.”


Tarbell played for the San Jose Earthquakes from 2016-2019 after being chosen in the First Round of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft by the Earthquakes. During his time in San Jose, Tarbell registered 128 saves in MLS regular-season action. In addition to his 41 regular-season appearances, Tarbell also made seven appearances (all starts) in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup from 2017-2019. Notably, the goalkeeper helped the Quakes reach the semifinals of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.


At the collegiate level, Tarbell played for Clemson University from 2012-2015, making 56 appearances (55 starts). Tarbell helped the Tigers reach the final of the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament in 2015, his senior year. During his time at Clemson, Tarbell earned a spot on the following end-of-year teams: the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America Second Team (2015), the NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team (2015), the All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) First Team (2015) and the ACC All-Tournament Team (2014).


Crew SC is currently in Tucson, Arizona participating in the 2020 Visit Tucson Sun Cup, which runs from February 15-22.


The Black & Gold begin the 2020 MLS regular season at MAPFRE Stadium against New York City FC, on Sunday, March 1 at 12:30 p.m. ET.
