SuperDraft prospect spotlight: Leo Stolz, UCLA

Leo Stolz

Ahead of this week's 2015 MLS SuperDraft, presented by adidas in Philadelphia, ColumbusCrewSC.com takes a look at some of the prospects that may address Crew SC's needs with the 14th overall selection. The series continues with UCLA midfielder Leo Stolz.

UCLA midfielder Leo Stolz checks all the boxes coaches usually look for at the MLS SuperDraft: technical ability, leadership (Stolz served as the Bruins' Captain for two seasons) and experience. The 2014 MAC Hermann Trophy winner and 1860 Munich youth product does, however, come with some caution given the fact that the German-born midfielder will require an international player slot. Stolz's age (he turns 24 on February 15) also gives him less time to develop in MLS than other prospects.

Still, Stolz would be a steal for Crew SC with the 14th pick. The midfielder scored 24 goals and added 25 assists in three seasons at UCLA and another at George Mason on his way to leading the Bruins to the College Cup Final as a senior. Given the midfielder's seven years spent with 1860 Munich --  Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter and Assistant Coach Josh Wolff also saw time with Die Löwen in their careers -- Stolz could be an ideal backup for Tony Tchani and Wil Trapp in central midfield of Crew SC's possession-based system. The current depth chart for the Black & Gold in central midfield includes Trapp, Tchani, Kevan George, Mohammed Saeid and Homegrown Player Ben Swanson.
