On the match…
“It was a disappointing game and a disappointing result. We’ve given up ten goals in the last two games and we need to look into how we’ve been playing and how we’re defending and what we’re doing on the field. Basically we gave Seattle some easy goals and today we did the same. We can score five goals, but if we’re going to give away more, it’s not going to work. We pushed in the second half and would have tied it. That cross is what a striker lives for, the diving header, but you have to score it. After that, pushing for the goal, we gave up two breaks. One was in front of the box and the other a misjudged long ball and we paid the price. I knew that Toronto is not an easy team to play against, they didn’t have anything to lose, but we made to many mistakes and allowed too many goals.”
On the break affecting the performance…
“The players deserve the time off, so there’s no question about that. But that cannot be an excuse.”
On there being more fight in this game than in Seattle…
“We try to win no matter if it’s 1-0, 2-0, 3-0. We try to win no matter the score. We just have to keep playing, and playing better.”
On positives from this game…
“The flank play in the second half was very good. We had some good passing and a lot of attacking play was very good, so that’s very positive. We gave up four goals but I don’t think you can blame Chad Marshall and [Julius] James for those goals, so that’s very positive too.”
On the Heinemann substitution…
“We had to make some changes. We were chasing the game so it had to be Jeff [Cunningham] or Tommy [Heinemann], so sooner or later they would be on the field.”
On only having three days till Houston game…
“We have two days to regroup and tomorrow we have a reserve game and we hope it’s a win, and then on Wednesday we have Houston. We have to win some games.”
Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer:
On the match…
“Any game in this league is tough especially late in the season, whether it’s the first team or the last team. Sometimes playing the last place team’s even harder because those guys are fighting for their jobs, so you’ve got to be prepared for those fights, and we weren’t.”
On two losses in a row…
“Ten goals in two games, it honestly makes me sick and makes me want to go to Obetz right now and train with Vadim. It’s a lot of things. It’s not just our back four, it’s not just or midfielders, it’s not just our forwards, it’s all of us. We’ve all got to be out there on the field fighting for each other and not getting stretched out. All it take is one guy to not step up and do his role and it seems that that’s happening now.”
Crew forward Tommy Heinemann:
On bringing some hope in the second half…
“Coming in you just want to raise the level and give the team a boost, and I was trying to do that. We were on them even before I came in.”
On his goal…
“I took it off one of their midfielders and played it to Emmanuel and Emmanuel played it to Robbie who made a great run in behind and played it across for the finish. It was a great play, but it’s disappointing not to get the result.”
On positives…
“It’s tough, especially coming off our last loss. They pulled us out of our game and into their game, which is frustrating. It’s frustrating to lose and to lose at home.”
Toronto FC coach Aron Winter:
On the match…
“We played today against a good team, a good opponent. They’re doing very well in the league, and if you watched the whole game, the goals we scored were great. After Stefan [Frei] got hurt there was about five minutes that we weren’t very organized, but then they scored and the team reacted well.”
On being opportunistic on goals…
“All the goals, the movement, how we played in the final entry, I think we did well. Most of the games we have created a lot of opportunities but we were not sharp enough with finishing, but today we were sharp with our opportunities even though they weren’t that good.”
On first time beating Columbus…
“Think it’s great because it’s a derby, TFC hates Columbus, and the two teams are not far away from each other. It is a derby, and it’s nice for the crowd and the fans. The win against Columbus was also very nice for the team, because it’s also our first away victory.”
On what helped TFC score so many goals…
“I think if you’re playing against a team like Columbus, away, and you’re making four goals, it’s a great compliment because it’s not easy. We were good with our opportunities but we also won in the pass as well. It’s good, we are making improvements.”
Toronto forward Ryan Johnson:
On the match…
“I thought we deserved this one tonight. We did what we had to do when it came to putting away our chances and it was a good result for us.”
On his first half goal…
“I saw the cross coming in, made my run to the back post, tried to put it back across the keeper and it was a good finish.”
On the atmosphere and crowd…
“It was really good. This one’s always a big one, the rivalry between us and the Crew and I’m glad the fans came out to support.”
On winning the Trillium Cup…
“Yeah, we’re trying to win this, we’re trying to win CONCACAF, and the league is tough, but at the end of the day we’re still working hard fighting for our jobs and that’s number one for us and we always want to give the best effort for the fans. The fans are number one for us.”
Toronto defender Andy Iro:
On the match…
“It was a good game and I thought the teams really showed the desire to win, and it was obviously entertaining for the fans. We got off to a good start and I think we did some things that we haven’t been doing that well in our previous games, which is take our chances. Obviously we went into half time two-nil up and at that point it was kind of our work and organization to get the win. To our credit, we gave up two goals and we knew the Crew were going to come, and we scored two more, so it was a good all around performance.”
On his return to Crew Stadium…
“It was all love man; I saw some Iro T-shirts and it was great. The fans were great to me here and it was great seeing them and seeing all the organization and all the people that made the previous four years of my life great.”
On winning the Trillium Cup with both Columbus and Toronto…
“When I was at the Crew I don’t think we ever lost to them, so it’s definitely kind of bitter sweet winning here. Obviously, first away win of the season, first time to beat the Crew and winning the Cup so it means a lot.”
