Eastern Conference Roundup: Week 7

Ball on the stand mls

Columbus Crew SC 2-1 win vs. Toronto FC

The first match of the Trillium Cup belongs to the Black & Gold after their 2-1 win over Toronto FC. Although the Reds opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a Jozy Altidore header off a Victor Vazquez corner kick, Crew SC netted twice before the second half. Ola Kamara’s goal in the 37th minute equalized for Columbus, and Justin Meram helped his team emerge on top in the 44th minute when he cleverly placed the ball in the bottom corner of the net.

Orlando City SC 2-1 win vs. LA Galaxy

There’s no place like home for Orlando City, especially after last week’s match against the LA Galaxy. The Lion’s 2-1 victory marks their fourth straight win at home, making them the only MLS team in history to open a stadium with four straight wins. Orlando opened the scoring after Will Johnson lofted a shot in the back of the net in the 9th minute. They were able to hold of the Galaxy until an exciting 83rd minute goal by Romain Alessandrini tied things up. It appeared the match would end in a tie until Cyle Larin scored a dramatic game-winner in stoppage time to put the Lions back on top.

Chicago Fire 3-0 win vs. New England Revolution

After three straight wins, it seems that Bastian Schweinsteiger might just be Chicago’s lucky charm. The Fire haven’t lost since the addition of the German legend. After New England’s Je-Vaughn Watson was shown his second yellow card in the 27th minute, things were downhill for the Revs. Schweinsteiger found the back of the net in the 45th minute, and then a brace by Nemanja Nikolic (45’, 73’) sealed New England’s fate.

New York City FC 2-0 win at Philadelphia Union

New York has finally won their first road match of the 2017 MLS regular season thanks to Jack Harrison and David Villa. The Union fell 2-0, adding to their now six-game losing streak. The first goal of the match came in the 52nd minute when City’s Ronald Matarrita picked Harrison out of the crowd allowing him to find the back of the net. The Union’s fate was sealed thanks to Villa’s heroics in the 90th minute. The Spanish legend struck the ball from 50 yards out lofting it over the Philadelphia’s keeper’s head.

New York Red Bulls 2-0 win vs. D.C. United

For the first time this season, the Red Bulls found the back of the net multiple times without the help of an own goal by their opponents. Alex Muyl nodded in a corner kick seconds into the second half to put his team on top. Bradley Wright-Phillips made sure things stayed that way when he found the back of the net in the 62nd minute, his third goal in his past five matches.

Atlanta United FC 2-1 loss at Montreal Impact

Montreal Impact cut their 2-1 victory close against Atlanta United last week. Atlanta opened the scoring late in the first half with a Kenwyne Jones 40th minute goal. However, United’s center back Leandro Gonzalez Pirez was shown a straight red for his foul on Matteo Mancosu shortly after his team found the back of the net. Ignacio Piatti, who has been sidelined due to injury, made his return to the Montreal lineup by scoring a penalty kick, equalizing before the second half. Despite playing a man down for the remainder of the match, United held their ground until deep into stoppage when Anthony Jackson-Hamel came to Montreal’s rescue with a cheeky backheel that found the back of the net.
