Crew SC 2-0 win vs. Orlando City SC
The Black & Gold continued their climb up the MLS Eastern Conference standings after they defeated Orlando 2-0. With the help of midfielder Justin Meram’s brace, the Lions tasted their first defeat of the season. Only four of Orlando’s 14 shots were on target, keeping it an easy 2-0 victory for Crew SC.
Atlanta United FC 0-0 draw at Seattle Sounders FC
Although there were scoring opportunities for both sides, Atlanta and Seattle both had their powerful defenses to thank for last weeks scoreless draw. This was the Sounders first scoreless draw of the season, and United’s first of all-time.
New York City FC 2-1 win vs. San Jose Quakes
New York’s captain, David Villa, was full of flair in his team’s 2-1 win over San Jose. Although the Quakes scored early in the first half with a 6th minute goal by Marco Ureña, it was quickly answered for less than five minutes later. Both of New York’s goals were created, by what appeared to be blind back heel passes, by Villa’s to Jack Harrison (10’) and Tommy McNamara (67’).
New York Red Bulls 4-1 loss at Houston Dynamo
The Red Bulls have Erick Torres to blame for their 4-1 loss last week. Despite opening the scoring with Bradley Wright-Phillips’ 13th minute goal, New York quickly lost control of the game with an equalizer by Dylan Remick only a minute later. After that, it was all down hill for the Red Bulls. Torres took over the match scoring a hat trick that sent the Red Bulls packing.
Toronto FC 0-0 draw vs. Sporting Kansas City
Toronto FC and Sporting Kansas City played to a chilly scoreless draw. Both teams had identical 1-0-3 records coming into the match. Although neither team managed to find the back of the net, Toronto’s Sebastian Giovinco managed to find the crossbar in the 59th minute, his team’s closest chance they got to scoring that night.
Chicago Fire 2-2 draw vs. Montreal Impact
The German legend, Bastian Schweinsteiger didn’t hesitate in making his grand debut with the Chicago Fire. He put his team on the board first with a powerful header off a cross from David Accam in the 17th minute. A 61st minute goal by Matteo Mancosu tied things up, and the Impact thought their victory was secured by a 90th minute goal by Ballou Jean-Yves Tabla. However, Luis Solignac made sure the Fire had a reason to celebrate with his equalizer in the third minute of stoppage time.
New England Revolution 1-1 draw at Portland Timbers
The Revs managed to hold the league-leading Portland Timbers to a single goal, leaving the teams all tied up in their Week 5 matchup of the MLS regular season. Diego Valeri did what he does best and scored in the 12th minute after smashing in a side volley for the Timbers. He has now scored five goals in five games. Unfortunately for Portland, their goal was answered for in the 84th minute with a Lee Nguyen equalizer.
D.C. United 2-1 win vs. Philadelphia Union
D.C. United finally found the back of the net and secured their first victory of the 2017 MLS regular season. United failed to score in their first three matches, but netted two goals in the first half against the Union. José Guillermo Ortiz got his team on the board in the 18th minute, his first MLS goal. Luciano Acosta found the back of the net less than ten minutes later. C.J. Sapong ruined United’s shutout after he netted one in the 71st minute.
