Crew Coverage pres. by Medical Mutual | Rydström: ‘Very happy’ after 2-1 win over Galaxy

It was worth the wait.

Inclement weather might’ve delayed kickoff, but it didn’t deprive the Columbus Crew of their first home win this season, as the Black & Gold beat LA Galaxy, 2-1, on Wednesday night at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field.

With the win, the Crew are unbeaten in three of their last four matches across all competitions.

“First of all, I must say I was impressed that it was people still here and it was that loud. Very happy for the support for the players,” head coach Henrik Rydström said after the victory. “I love to win, and at the end of the day, you need the wins also to create trust, but to get the possibility to celebrate with the supporters – know how much it means to them so it was very important and wonderful.”

Wednesday night was an example of the Black & Gold starting to put things together. Offensively, the attack generated chances – across the frontline. Defensively, the home side kept LA’s attack asleep until the final moments of the match.

In short, the growth that Rydström has seen in training was on display on the pitch.

“I have been nagging with you about I see progress and I see it in training. I'm very happy that the players also showed it in most parts of the game against a tough opponent,” the Swede said. “They have their problems, but it's a tough opponent. I'm happy for that.”

Daniel Gazdag registered his first goal of the campaign in the 40th minute, when he finished a low cross from Hugo Picard. The assist was Picard’s first in MLS.

“I was just trying to get myself ready to score when I got the chance, and I'm happy that it happened finally,” Gazdag said. “Obviously the last two months, I would say it was not the best two months of my life. I was working hard every day on training and I was hoping to get a chance. I mean, I think I did good in the games now that I played, but obviously I don't want to stop now. I want to help the team as much as I can.”

Diego Rossi doubled the Columbus lead 63 seconds into the second half with a brilliant finish for his fourth goal in 2026.

As Max Arfsten played a ball in to Rossi, the Uruguayan allowed it to roll across his body, which freed space for an open look on frame.

LA eventually scored in the 86th minute and had additional chances, but the Black & Gold dug in and earned a quality midweek win.

“Of course, the second goal gives you a little bit more calmness and we could play with confidence,” Rydström said. “I also liked how we played in big parts of the game. Really happy with the performance.”

The Crew will look to continue momentum on Saturday night when they host Gazdag’s old club: the Philadelphia Union. Don’t miss the action.
