Columbus Crew signs Crew Academy product and midfielder Sean Zawadzki

COLUMBUS – Columbus Crew today announced that it has signed Crew Academy product and midfielder Sean Zawadzki as a Homegrown Player through the 2023 season with Club options through 2025. An Olmsted Falls, Ohio native, the midfielder represented the Crew Academy from 2015-2018, featuring for the Under-15/16, U-17/18 and U-18/19 sides, and serving as captain during his last two years.

Zawadzki played for Georgetown University from 2018-2021 and joins Sebastian Berhalter, Aidan Morris and Isaiah Parente as one of four Crew Academy products on the Crew's current roster.

During his time in Georgetown, Zawadzki made 74 appearances (66 starts) while scoring four goals and providing six assists. A captain during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, the midfielder was pivotal in helping the Hoyas win the 2019 NCAA College Cup title as well as two Big East Conference Tournaments (2019, 2021) and three Big East regular-season championships (2019, 2020, 2021).

Zawadzki was awarded Georgetown’s 2019 Most Valuable Player Award as well as the 2020 Ricardo Mendoza Award for spirit, leadership and dedication. He was also recognized as the 2021 Big East Defensive Player of the Year while being named a semifinalist for the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy. Zawadzki was also named to the following Best XI squads: United Soccer Coaches First Team All-East Region (2021, 2020), Top Drawer Soccer’s Best XI (2021), First Team All-Big East (2021), Second Team All-Big East (2020), Big East All-Academic Team (2020) and the Big East All-Freshman Team (2018).

At the international level, Zawadzki trained with the U.S. Men’s Under-19 National Team in January of 2019.

Crew players are set to report for entrance physicals and testing on January 16 before departing for a training camp in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from January 18-28. With the seasonal bubble currently encompassing the field at Historic Crew Stadium, the Crew will train in-market from February 1-6 at the OhioHealth Performance Center prior to traveling to Charleston, South Carolina, for the second trip of the preseason from February 7-19.

The Black & Gold are set to open the 2022 MLS season by hosting Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Lower.com Field in Opening Match on Saturday, February 26 at 3:30 p.m. ET. Following the home opener, the Crew hits the road and travels to face the San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park on March 5 for the first away match of the season. The 2022 season will be the Black & Gold’s 27th in MLS and the first full season at Lower.com Field, located in Astor Park.
