Columbus Crew SC names Tim Hanley as an Assistant Coach

COLUMBUS — Columbus Crew SC today announced that it has named Tim Hanley as an Assistant Coach on Crew SC Head Coach Caleb Porter’s technical staff. Hanley has 35 years of coaching experience which includes winning MLS Cup on three occasions (2001, 2003, 2006). Most recently, Hanley served as a goalkeeping coach for the Philadelphia Union.

“Tim is someone who brings over three decades of coaching experience to our Club,” said Crew SC President and General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “As someone who has not only worked in MLS but won trophies in this League, we believe Tim will be a great addition to our technical staff as we continue to put together a team that contends for championships. We are excited to welcome Tim to Columbus Crew SC and look forward to seeing his impact on our squad.”


Hanley joins Crew SC after working for the Philadelphia Union during the 2018 season. Hanley’s previous MLS coaching experience also includes working with the San Jose Earthquakes (1997-1999, 2001-2005, 2015-2017), the Houston Dynamo (2006, 2009-2014) and the LA Galaxy (2007). During his time in MLS, Hanley has reached MLS Cup five times (2001, 2003, 2006, 2011, 2012), winning the trophy three times (2001, 2003, 2006). Additionally, he has reached the final of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on two occasions (2007, 2018). At the collegiate level, Hanley worked as an assistant coach at Stanford University from 2001-2005, helping the Cardinals reach the NCAA Tournament College Cup on two occasions (2001-2002).

Tim’s experience in MLS is unrivaled and he will further strengthen our coaching staff.”


Before becoming a coach, Hanley had a five-year career as a professional goalkeeper. During his time as a player, Hanley featured for American sides the Tampa Bay Rowdies (1980-1981) and the San Jose Earthquakes (1981, 1983-1984), as well as Scotland’s Hibernian Football Club (1982) and Switzerland’s Servette FC (1985).


The Crew’s 2020 MLS preseason is currently underway in Chula Vista, California. The Black & Gold depart to Cancun, Mexico on January 29 before traveling to Tucson, Arizona on February 10 to participate in the 2020 Visit Tucson Sun Cup, which is set to take place from February 15-22.
