Columbus Crew SC names Kelvin Jones as Crew SC Academy Director

COLUMBUS – Columbus Crew SC today announced that it has named Kelvin Jones as its Crew SC Academy Director. Jones most recently served as the Under-19 Head Coach for the Crew SC Academy before accepting the new role.

“We are delighted to promote Kelvin to the position of Crew SC Academy Director,” said Crew SC Technical Director and Vice-President of Soccer Operations Pat Onstad. “Kelvin is a natural leader and someone who not only understands the culture of our Club, but who has also played a key role in player and coaching development. Throughout his time with the Club, he has continued to step-up and succeed in positions he has taken on and he is an excellent testament to the talent we have within our organization. We want to congratulate Kelvin on his new role and look forward to seeing him continue to grow with this Club.”


Jones joined Crew SC Academy as an Assistant Coach in 2017, serving as a U-15 Head Coach before taking on the role of U-19 Head Coach in 2019. Prior to his time with the Black & Gold, he spent four years as the Director of Coaching for Virginia Legacy Soccer Club from 2013-2017. Jones currently holds numerous coaching certifications including a U.S. Soccer Federation A License, a NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma, a U.S. Soccer Federation National Youth License and he is currently working towards an Elite Formation Coaching License, which is operated as a partnership between MLS and the French Football Federation.


A former professional player, Jones played for USL sides the Charleston Battery from 2004-2005 and for the Richmond Kickers from 2006-2009. During his time in Charleston, Jones helped the Battery reach the semifinals of the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. While with the Richmond Kickers, he helped the club win two USL Second Division championships (2006, 2009). Jones also played for the D.C. United Reserves and served as both a player and General Manager, Head Coach and Owner of the Premier Arena Soccer League’s Fredericksburg Generals.


At the collegiate level, Jones played for Wake Forest University, where he made 61 appearances 2000-2003, while registering four goals and five assists.
