Columbus Crew defender Milos Degenek named to Australia’s final roster for the 2022 FIFA World Cup 

COLUMBUS – Columbus Crew today announced that defender Milos Degenek has been selected by Australian Men’s National Team Head Coach Graham Arnold for the final 26-man roster for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. With his selection, Degenek becomes the eighth player to be named to a World Cup roster while a member of the Black & Gold and joins captain Jonathan Mensah as the two current players with World Cup experience.

Degenek joined the Crew prior to the start of the 2022 season and made 28 appearances (24 starts) in his first season with the Black & Gold.

Born in Croatia, Degenek and his family emigrated to Australia in 2000. The 28-year-old made his international debut for Australia in a friendly against England on May 27, 2016. To date he has earned 38 caps, and took part in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. Degenek represented both Australia (U-23, U-17) and Serbia (U-19) at the youth level.

The Socceroos qualified for their fifth consecutive World Cup courtesy of a 5-4 penalty shootout win over Peru in the intercontinental playoff in June.

Drawn into Group D, Australia opens tournament play against reigning world champions France on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. ET, before taking on Tunisia on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 5 a.m. ET. Australia close out group play against Denmark on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 10 a.m. ET. All three matches are scheduled to take place at Al Janoub Stadium in Al-Wakrah, Qatar. All World Cup games will be televised in the United States via FOX or Fox Sports 1 (English), Telemundo (Spanish), or streaming via the Fox Sports and Peacock apps.
