On Monday, in an interview with the Columbus Dispatch's Tom Reed, Columbus Crew SC Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter confirmed that central defender Gaston Sauro is scheduled to miss the entire 2017 season after undergoing knee surgery.
The 26-year-old Argentine made 13 appearances in 2016 (12 starts).
As Berhalter confirmed in the initial report, the 6-foot-3 defender remains in Columbus and is scheduled to have another surgery in the coming weeks.
“It’s going to be a number of surgeries he’s going to get and he’s going to be out for the year,” Berhalter said to The Dispatch on Monday. “That’s our reality. It’s a tough reality, but that’s the way it is.”
