Five Columbus Crew SC players have been named to preliminary 40-man rosters released by Concacaf for the 2019 Gold Cup, per an official announcement from the governing body on Monday, May 20.
Forward Gyasi Zardes (USA), midfielders David Guzmán (Costa Rica) and Wil Trapp (USA), defender Waylon Francis (Costa Rica), and goalkeeper Zack Steffen (USA) were among 78 MLS players to be named to the preliminary rosters.
Crew SC is one of seven teams to have five or more players selected and one of just three teams to feature at least three players on the United States’ 40-man roster (Atlanta United, LAFC).
Zardes has earned 44 caps with the U.S. Men’s National Team, scoring seven goals. Zardes scored his first goal for the Stars and Stripes on June 5, 2015 against the Netherlands and most recently earned his seventh tally in a 1-0 win over Ecuador (March 21).
Guzman has earned 54 caps the Costa Rica National Team, representing Los Ticos at the FIFA World Cup (2018), Copa America (2011), the Gold Cup (2011, 2015, 2017) and the Copa Centroamericana (2011, 2017).
Trapp has earned 15 caps for the USMNT, having most recently subbed on for the U.S. in a friendly contest against Chile (March 26) earlier this year after playing 59 minutes in a 1-0 win over Ecuador (March 21).
Francis has earned seven caps for Los Ticos to date, with his most recent appearance coming in a friendly against Guatemala at Estadio Mateo Flores in Guatemala City, Guatemala on March 22 of this year.
Steffen has earned eight caps with the USMNT, as his most recent appearance for the U.S. came earlier this year in a friendly against Costa Rica (February 2), in which he registered a shutout.
