2018 Season Rewind

2018 Season Rewind | With 50 goals and 50 assists, Higuaín stands alone

Federico Higuain - Pedro Santos - D.C. United - 3.24.18

ā€œFederico Higuain sending it inā€¦ Oh, itā€™s in the net! Itā€™s in the net!"

Thus, Federico Higuain signed his name into the history books as Crew SCā€™s first player to record at least 50 goals and 50 assists in regular-season action, as well as one of only 19 players ā€“ at the time ā€“ in MLS history to achieve this feat.

Higuain ā€“ who was coming off a single-season career-best 14 assists in 2017 ā€“ had already notched two goals heading into the match against D.C. United, leaving him with 50 goals and 49 assists in 152 regular-season appearances (147 starts) for the Black & Gold.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the 40th minute, Higuain went to take a corner kick. The Argentine playmaker sent an in-swinger into D.C.ā€™s box, which Ricardo Clark put away to give Crew SC a 2-1 lead.

Two minutes later, Higuain was notching his second assist of the evening, as he combined with Cristian Martinez to provide the helper on Pedro Santosā€™ 42nd-minute goal.

Notably, Higuainā€™s 40th-minute helper would prove to be the game-winning assist, bringing his Crew SC regular-season total to 17 game-winning helpers, allowing him to take sole possession of first place in the Black & Gold all-time game-winning assists chart.

Following the match, the Argentine had the following to say inside the locker room when asked his thoughts on joining the 50/50 Club:

ā€œIā€™m happy. Iā€™m proud to be a part of this team for the last few years.ā€
