The EAA awards follows Ghana Sports History's recognition of Mensah as the 2020 Footballer of the Year, which was announced earlier this month.

Mensah's EAA award for Sportsman of the Year focuses on the recognition of sportsmen in all branches of sports, as well as sports administrators who have been instrumental or who have significantly influenced the development of the Ghanaian Sports Industry and Social Media community.

Mensah captained the Black & Gold in 2020 and was named to the 2020 MLS Best XI for the first time in his career, in addition to being named a finalist for 2020 MLS Defender of the Year. Notably, Mensah played each minute of the Crew's 2020 regular-season and post-season matches for a total of 2,460 minutes, as the five-year MLS veteran helped lead Columbus to its second MLS Cup title.
