Having a new Designated Player contract signed ahead of the 2015 MLS campaign, Crew SC playmaker Federico Higuaín hasn't changed his approach when it comes to his on-field approach for the Black & Gold.
Moving into Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter's second season with the club, Higuaín believes Crew SC will continue to turn heads around MLS in 2015 with its possession-based attacking system.
"It was a good season, and good direction under Gregg," Higuaín said of the 2014 season through a translator. "As this season comes about, I feel very comfortable [in the system] now. He’s a manager who understands the game and he’s very capable of giving us more. With the changes being made here, you can see the foundation is there and all of the support that is coming through the team is just to help the team grow… Not only just the organization, but in the League, he’s showing a lot for this club."
Joining the club in August 2012, Higuaín earned the 2012 MLS Newcomer of the Year award and has gone on to record 27 goals and 23 assists in 71 matches for the club. Despite the individual accomplishments, Higuaín's goals for 2015 remain team-focused.
"The mission of the team — as it is every year — is to maintain good form, to stay within the team and play well, and help one another out and obviously do what the coach asks," the Argentine explained. "As a group, it’s the same as always. We had a good season last year, now we’re looking to improve. We’re looking to do better and do more. At the end of the day, we want to succeed."
Higuaín has created 247 chances in his two-and-a-half seasons in Columbus, more than any other player in MLS during that time. With a proven scorer in Kei Kamara joining the club this season, Higuaín believes Kamara will bring "happy times" for the Crew SC attack.
"Kei, as the rest of the other guys that came in, you can tell they’re very talented players," he said. "They’ve had their own great professional careers. For us, it’s just a matter of time for Kei to also adapt into the system, but there’s no doubt that we expect good times, happy times from Kei."
Crew SC continues its 2015 preseason preparations in Lakewood Ranch, Florida ahead of its 2015 season-opener on March 7 in Houston.
